![]() International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) 2006. The rhinoceros hornbill eats fruit, insects, small reptiles, rodents and smaller birds. Once the babies are old enough (fully feathered)to leave the nest the female and male chip away the dry mud so the babies can get out. rhinoceros, Hornbill, birds The rhinoceros hornbill (Buceros rhinoceros) is a large species of forest hornbill (Bucerotidae). This creates a very small hole, only large enough for the male to feed the female (and later chicks) and for the female to defecate out the hole. The great hornbill, a member of the hornbill family, is the official state bird of Kerala, an Indian state. The Rhinoceros hornbill is the official state animal of Sarawak, a Malaysian state located in Borneo. fledglings have been noted in Sungai Segama (Fogden 1965) and adult birds have also used artificial nests in Kinabatangan with a chick fledging successfully (HUTAN 2019). Most live in mature, tropical forests, but some are desert dwellers. The Rhinoceros hornbill also forms large groups of up to 15 individuals (mostly young adults), which can be seen roaming the forest canopy together. Others are carnivorous, snapping up lizards, small mammals, and birds. After the eggs are laid the male collects mud, and the male and female pack that mud, food, and feces to ‘mud-up’ the tree cavity entrance. Hornbill was used as the official mascot of one of Malaysias political parties, the Democratic Action Party. Rhinoceros Hornbills are among the largest of the world’s 54 species of hornbills, which are spread across Africa and India to Asia and New Guinea. These Hornbills lay their eggs inside tree trunks, the females stay inside with the eggs, while the male will bring her and the young food. I have had the pleasure of seeing them in Malaysia and Borneo. The courtship and bonding of these birds are critical, as the female must trust the male to provide her with everything when she is incubating and raising chicks. The Rhinoceros Hornbill (Buceros rhinoceros) is the most beautiful bird. The hoof is a hollow structure made of keratin (the same material as human fingernails) and acts as an echo chamber, amplifying the calls of birds. It has white underparts, especially to the tail. Similar to its American counterpart, the Toucan, the rhinoceros hornbill (Buceros rhinoceros) has a prominent golden yellow horn, called a casque, on the top of its beak. ![]() This bird has a mainly white beak and casque (the tip of the casque curves upward strikingly), but there are orange places here and there. Like most other hornbills, the male has orange or red eyes, and the female has whitish eyes. The Rhinoceros Hornbill is one of the largest hornbills. They live in the Malay Peninsula, Singapore, Sumatra, Java, and Borneo, and are only found in only the highest form of rain forest. ![]()
